BBRS Director Patti Kahn: A Thoughtful Tzedakah Decision: BBRS Children Discern with Heart!

One of the greatest joys in our community is watching our children grow into thoughtful, compassionate Jewish leaders. Recently, they demonstrated just how seriously they take the mitzvah of tzedakah.

Rather than simply choosing a charity at random, the children engaged in a meaningful process of discussion and voting. They began by considering three charity categories where they could make an impact: addressing hunger, supporting refugees, or helping those affected by cancer. After considerable reflection and debate, cancer received the most votes.

The students then continued their deliberations, recognizing that even within that category there are many ways to help. They discussed whether to support families whose children are battling cancer or to focus specifically on breast cancer. Through another round of voting, the children chose to direct their support toward families in Israel whose children are facing cancer.

Their final selection was Be’Darchei Tamar (Tamar’s Way,) an organization in Israel that provides resources and support to families whose children are undergoing cancer treatment. The group offers practical assistance, emotional support, and care to families during difficult cancer journeys.

The children were guided in this process by the work of The Good People Fund of Millburn (GOODPEOPLEFUND.ORG,) an organization known for carefully vetting the grantees it supports. Knowing that The Good People Fund thoroughly reviews each organization gave the students confidence that their tzedakah would reach the affected families in need.

This experience was more than a charitable decision—it was a lesson in Jewish values. Our children learned that giving is not only about generosity, but also about responsibility, thoughtful consideration, connection, and the power of community.

We are incredibly proud of the maturity, empathy and passion they demonstrated. Their decision reminds us that the next generation understands deeply what it means to repair the world—tikkun olam—one thoughtful choice at a time.

BBRS children will be collecting funds for Be’Darchei Tamar through May12th. If you would like to contribute, please deliver your tzedakah contribution to Patti’s mailbox in the main office. We thank you!
