Membership Committee: Creating a Welcoming Community at CBI

CBI is not just a synagogue — it is a home, a sanctuary, and a gathering place for people from all walks of life. As the co-chairs of Congregation B’nai Israel’s Membership Committee, we can add to the warm spirit of our synagogue community.

CBI is made up of individuals who practice Judaism in many ways. Some of us connect through daily rituals, while others engage with Judaism during the High Holidays or special life cycle events. Our community includes members from diverse backgrounds, and each person has a unique connection with CBI. By treating one another with kindness and compassion, we can all contribute to the warm and welcoming community we have.

Growing the CBI community means more than just welcoming new members through the door. It’s about ensuring that everyone — whether they’re attending their first service or have been here for decade — feels seen, respected, and supported. This starts with small, simple actions: greeting someone with a smile, offering to lend a hand, or pausing to appreciate the different paths that have brought us all together.

We’re excited to continue initiatives that foster engagement, inclusivity, and connection, such as our cooking class series, Around the Jewish Table. At the first class in December, we learned traditional Chinese dumpling making. This series will continue to feature Jewish cuisines from around the world and eventually explore dishes that accommodate dietary restrictions like vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free. These efforts are just one way to reflect our commitment to embracing everyone’s unique needs and traditions.

Membership at CBI is more than paying dues; it’s an investment in a community that supports, uplifts, and inspires. Your contributions help sustain programs, services, and opportunities that allow us to connect with one another and with Judaism in meaningful ways. By giving back to our community, we create the space to receive support, friendship, and a sense of belonging in return.

CBI is our home, and it is home to many others, too. Let’s make it a place where everyone — regardless of their background, beliefs, or circumstances — feels they belong. In these challenging times, let’s be mindful of one another, practice kindness, and focus on rebuilding our connections. Together, we can ensure that our synagogue remains a source of strength, warmth, and inclusivity for all.
